ETH Risk Center Activity Report for 2018-2019

RC_2020_report

2018 and 2019 were productive years for the ETH Risk Center. We welcomed four new Members. The Center has largely expanded its Edu- cation programmes, from the innovative Risk Case Study Challenges to courses for professionals. We hosted many events and broadened the Zurich Risk Community. The Risk Center has successfully build capacity for tackling the big societal challenges and global trends that humanity is facing and will face.

In 2020 and beyond, the Risk Center is poised to explore new avenues for integrative research, focusing on the resilience of human and en- gineered systems, deep uncertainty and climate change, and "healthy ageing". The Center is expanding its outreach using the tools of online communication that the Coronavirus crisis has brought to the fore. Finally, the digitization of health care systems in an ageing society is a topic that we are eager to explore in the next few years.

We hope you enjoy reading this report!

"Who are you? Biometrics, Opportunities and Risks"

Fingerprinting has long been used for identification purposes, but biometrics are now becoming mass market, with fingerprint unlocking of smartphones becoming a default setting instead of passwords and
facial recognition now being used on iPhone Xs and Microsoft laptops. The use of biometrics in digital security perfectly combines convenience and accuracy, but of course there are many risks to be aware of
so that they can be properly addressed: potential hacking, planned or unplanned abusive usage, respect of privacy... This is a deeply personal subject for all of us!

About Anne Bouverot:
Anne Bouverot is the former CEO of French electronic security and biometrics company Morpho. Prior, she held various executive positions in the telecommunication industry. She was Executive Vice President,
Mobile Services, for France Télécom Orange and in 2011, she was appointed Director General and board member of the GSM Association (GSMA). Ms Bouverot holds a PhD in Computer Science from
Ecole Normale Supérieure, Paris.
